PANEWS: Emergency officials: "Prepare for Ike"

AS OF 11:55AM

Ken Carona with the Port Arthur Police Department released a statement that residents should begin preparations for Hurricane Ike's potential landfall in Southeast Texas.

"Recent updates from the State Operations Center and the National Weather Service have indicated that Hurricane Ike is currently moving across Cuba and is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico as early as Tuesday, 9-9-08," the release states. "The prediction of Ike's path is still very wide from the lower Texas coast to the middle of Louisiana. Residents should begin their personal preparation plans. This should include fueling of vehicles, having water, non-perishable foods, batteries, flashlights, first aid kits, and any other essential items they may need in case of an evacuation."

Carona said that at this time there are no scheduled evacuations.
