11 people want to be Head Football Coach at Lamar

According to the Beaumont Enterprise, 11 applicants have express interest in becoming Lamar University new head football coach.

Larry Kennan, a former head coach at Lamar from 1979-1981 who now serves as executive director of the NFL Coaches Association;

Ben Norton, a Vidor native who has served at three Southland Conference schools. He is currently co-offensive coordinator at Texas State and previously served as an assis-tant at McNeese State and Sam Houston State;

Kenith Pope, a Galveston native who spent time as an assistant under Kennan at Lamar. He was later an assistant coach at Alabama and Texas A&M, both under Fran-chione;

Jim Bob Helduser, a former coach at Texas State and an alumnus of Port Neches-Groves High School. Helduser succeeded Franchione at Texas State and coached there from 1992-1996, producing a 20-34-1 record.

Other lesser-known candidates are among the 11 applicants, including:

Randy Butler, a longtime assistant at Southern Mississippi;

Ronald Feldman, who lettered at Texas State from 1974-75;

Robert Hargrove, whose coaching history is unknown;

Dennis (Dirt) Winston, a former linebacker at Arkansas who won two Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers, then served stints as an assistant coach at Kentucky State, Toledo and the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos; and

Raymond Woodard Jr., a former All-American at Kilgore College who later played at Texas. He has just finished his first season as head coach at Navarro College in Corsi-cana.
