I waited to talk about the past election in Nederland until the Mid County Chronicle posted their story about to make a point.
My point is that not one elected city official made a comment in regards to this issue. Where are these elected officials? I mean come on! They won. They got what they wanted. Well they being everyone but one council member.
See below their writing:
In Nederland residents voted on a proposition that would take a quarter of a cent away from sales tax collections of the Economic Development Corporation and put it toward street repairs.
In a close race the proposition passed with 394 votes or 54 percent in favor and 324 voters or 46 percent opposed.
City officials said a half a cent of sales tax had been established for the EDC to be put toward business incentives and other development projects in Nederland.
Council members approved an ordinance in August authorizing a street maintenance sales tax election to be conducted in November.
City Manager Andre Wimer said the tax could generate approximately $425,000 to $450,000 annually and the funds would likely be utilized for contracted street repairs as City crews, due to manpower and time, are limited in how much additional work could be performed.
Officials said about $150,000 to $175,000 had been in the city budget for street repairs, but they did not believe that was enough.
Tracie Killian, executive director of the NEDC addressed the council in August and told them that she is aware that the need for street repairs is important to the residents, but the loss of these funds would be damaging to the EDC's efforts of attracting new businesses to Nederland. Mid County Chronicle
Oh well, at least the council is doing "their best".
By the way there is another city election coming up in May 2008.
