Call 2-1-1 if You Need Help Evacuating

News Release From South East Texas Regional Planning Commission

On the minds of many Southeast Texans is how to afford yet another evacuation, should it become necessary. There is no need for area residents to risk losing their homes or their lives. There is an answer in three little numbers. 2-1-1 is the link to the evacuation registry for those who simply cannot afford to evacuate as well as those with special medical needs.

If you have either of these needs and cannot evacuate with family or friends, you should call 2-1-1 today. If it is finances that would prevent you from evacuating again, you should register now to be transported to the safety of a shelter. Emergency officials must have enough advance notice to have transportation on hand to accommodate everyone who will need help.

Those with special needs who evacuated with family or friends during Gustav, but have decided they will need help in the future, should also call 2-1-1 now.

The evacuation list has hit a record of nearly 24 thousand registrants in our area and is expected to climb.

2-1-1 is a free call, available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week .
