STATEMENT FROM WATERBURY FOR CHIEF JUSTICE CAMPAIGN
REGARDING VOTER DISENFRANCHISEMENT IN JEFFERSON COUNTY
"The Charles Waterbury for Chief Justice Campaign wishes to express its grave concern regarding the efforts in Jefferson County to disenfranchise voters by not providing information about write in candidates to absentee voters.
The State of Texas places onerous conditions on all persons not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican Parties wishing to obtain ballot access. Therefore it is unconscionable that even after candidates have met all conditions precedent to be registered write-in candidates, Jefferson County nonetheless disregards the Constitutional rights of these candidates and voters in an effort to disenfranchise the voters of Jefferson County.
The Waterbury for Chief Justice Campaign urges all Jefferson County voters to fight this institutional voter suppression effort. If voters are unsure about the process of voting for registered write-ins, they may go to The Waterbury for Chief Justice Website at charlesforchief.com and download directions and explanations of the procedure.
The Waterbury for Chief Justice Campaign finds it extremely disturbing that only information about write-in candidates was excluded from materials sent out with absentee ballots given the fact that the Jefferson County Clerk's only opponent, Rhonda Dugas, is a write-in candidate. The conclusions are inescapable and very concerning to all who respect our democratic institutions. The Waterbury for Chief Justice Campaign stands ready to assist any voter who has been disenfranchised by the efforts of Jefferson County.
As a candidate for Chief Justice of The Texas Supreme Court, I am dedicated to the process of fairness both in the Courtroom and in the voting booth. Cleary a fair and just election process is at risk in Jefferson County."
