On June 12, 2006 the Nederland City Council held their first meeting of the month at 3:00 P.M.
Numerous items were on the agenda for that day.
The first item of business was to call the meeting to order and to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on May 22, 2006. Councilman Tim Sheffield was not in attendance due to work conflict.
Council considered action and voted to accept a donation of equipment from the Nederland Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. The equipment included an ice machine and depreciated book keeping in the amount of $40,099.00. City Council also accepted action approving improvements as constructed by Brystar Contracting, Inc. for the 2004 Smoke Test – Year 1 project and authorized the release of retainage. Council approved releasing the amount of $22,848.93 and accepted the improvements.
Council approved Resolution number 2006 – 08, authorizing a License to encroach at 2125 Hwy 69. This included 1.357 acres in which the Candelwood Suites are located.
Mayor Dick Nugent proclaimed the week of June 12, 2006 as “UM Army Week” in Nederland, Texas.
City Council voted to postpone an agreement with DRC Emergency Services, LLC for debris removal. They postponed action because City Manager and Attorney are working on refining issues. It was said that the issue should be resolved soon. Council then approved an agreement with Adjusters International for assistance with insurance claims. The council voted to approve this contract contingent upon the City attorney’s modifications. Council then approved a Project agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conversation Services for debris removal in the amount of $90,000. The agreement states that Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conversation Services will pay for 75% of the $90,000. Council then considered action approving an agreement with Bureau Veritas for inspection and plan review services. This company came into the city of Nederland to help Mr. Hatch in inspect buildings after hurricane Rita. Mr. Hatch will be having surgery so council approved an employee from this company to fill in for him at the rate of $6,000/week. This will be considered an independent contractor. City Attorney did have “many concerns with the wording of the contract but council did vote to approve it contingent upon the city attorney.
Council approved a change order number 3 in the amount of $3,028 with N&T Construction Co, INC. on renovations to the Nederland Recreation Center and Hughes Public Library.
Council voted to approve authorizing the submission of an application to the 2006 United States Department of Justice COPS Secure our Schools grant program in the amount of $384,000 to purchase security cameras for schools within the City of Nederland. The Nederland Independent School District will pay for what the grant does not. Council has to submit the application on behalf of the ISD.
Council then approved payments to N&T Construction in the amount of $84,003.88 for renovations to the Recreation Center, Hughes Library and Fire Station from Hurricane Rita. Also, approval was made to pay the bills of the city for the month
There was not an Executive Session.
Council then voted to adjourn at 3:50 P.M.
